Trees: They’re Worth It

Trees hold a healing power. They produce about 260 pounds of oxygen per year. That’s enough for a family of four to breathe clean air for about a year! The shade and wind buffering provided by trees reduce annual heating and cooling costs by $2.1 billion. Trees can also provide water for over 3,400 communities, roughly 60 million individuals.

Tentree’s Fashion for Passion

In an effort to increase the amount of clean, breathable oxygen in our atmosphere, clothing brand Tentree plants, soils and cultivates green spaces in communities in need of a healthy integration of trees. Tentree plants ten trees for every article of clothing sold. So far, they have planted nearly ten million trees.

Tentree revitalizes ecosystems that are in distress. That means Tentree helps produce more oxygen for communities that may otherwise have less greenspace. They operate under the message of transparency, dedication, and diligence.

  • Transparency: their message is clear and standards are available to the public.
  • Dedication: their mission is dedication to mother earth.
  • Diligence: the planting continues.

Tentree is WRAP-approved. Among other things, this means they agree to unannounced audits. Their factories must also commit to fair wages, work hours, safety and security measures and abide by local laws.

According to their founders, “[they] have worked to ensure that our environmental footprint is minimized throughout the supply chain by only working with factories that can source product from the local region. By doing this, we have shrunk our overall environmental impact and reduced approximately 15% of the pollution through shipping.”

Empowering Locals and Providing Sustainability

Here’s how it works. First, the company helps propagate seedlings to be used for planting. Second, locals and local organizations help clear land and prepare the land for planting. After preparation and planting, one local worker can work upwards of one full day of employment. So Tentree is bringing economic benefits to communities, too! They’ve partnered with the Canadian Wildlife Federation, WeForest, American Forests, Eden Reforestation and Trees for the Future. Under these partnerships, Tentree fosters lasting impacts in areas that perpetuate seedlings.

Tentree Treeplanting in Madagascar

Tentree’s partner on the ground in Madagascar Ethiopia, and Nepal is Eden Reforestation Projects. Eden’s “employ to plant” approach to reforestation reduces extreme poverty and restores healthy forests in Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Nepal by employing local villagers to plant millions of trees every year.

Tentree does not own land. Instead, Tentree works with local organizations to determine which plots of land are appropriate for planting and which plots may have been destroyed by deforestation. Tentree also works to educate communities on how to remain sustainable.
